Introduction to Web Design

Course Description

This is a hands-on, fast-paced course where students gain the conceptual and technical skills to create online art and design content. Techniques covered include image preparation, video and audio compression, navigation, HTML and CSS authoring using Adobe Dreamweaver and Google Chrome. This is a qualifying course towards the Certificate in Digital Media Skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:

Develop a basic understanding of front-end web design and development via HTML and CSS Gain practical skills, techniques, and strategies for building a basic HTML web site Possess a general perspective on the shifting landscape of web design and development

Teaching Methods and Delivery

Project steps, techniques and samples will be offered in several learning formats for study and review. Participates are encouraged to share their questions, developments and completed design projects with the instructor privately via inbox or Slack.

These boards will provide participants the opportunities to: clarify course, project and application information; gain group/peer perspectives on completed assignments; and receive to individualized critiques and feedback, course completion requirements.

Attendance

Screencast recordings and tutorial content can be viewed at any time.

Traditionally for in-class courses, successful completion is determined by the documented in person attendance of participants. Transferring this concept to the online environment, the Continuing Studies office bases online course participation on Canvas attendance via interactivity documentation. With the advancement of online analytics becoming available, the Continuing Studies Office can draw information from this new data to determine successful course completion.

Assignments and Exercises

Participants will be expected to design web exercises or projects each week of the course. Assignments help to activate new skills, build confidence and showcase the new techniques fused with independent concepts developed specifically for this course.

  • Week 1: Introduction to digital media production and web development
  • Week 2: Usability, media production concepts, and layout design
  • Week 3: Images, typography, multimedia, HTML5
  • Week 4: Web development, publishing, and analytics review
  • Week 5: Advanced CSS concepts and responsive design
  • Week 6: Course summary / introduction to JavaScript, JS frameworks, and plugins
