Week 1: Before We Begin

About Me

My name is Chris Kim, and I will be serving as your (virtual) instructor for the next six weeks.

Having graduated from Ryerson's RTA School of Media, I currently work as an independent web designer-developer for various businesses across Toronto. I am also in the midst of completing a doctoral degree in computer science with specialization in information visualization. Personally, I am infatuated with retro pop culture, jazz music vinyls, and general artsy things.

This course is all about PHP, MySQL and other topics in back-end web development. By the end of this 6-week course, I hope that you will be able to:

  • Develop a solid understanding of server-side web programming
  • Possess a broader perspective on standardization in web environments
  • Conduct a thorough evaluation of existing open-source solutions and web services
  • Build a strong strategy for architecture and implementation in web environments

This course is split into six parts, each consisting of a concept lecture (like this one) as well as a coding exercise with a screencast accompaniment. You are expected to join the course with some knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with little to no prior experience with back-end web programming.

Finally, you will need the following applications as you proceed with the course:
